What We Left in Uganda
We still remember our 2019 mission in Uganda quite fondly. Despite a few obstacles in the beginning, our arrival to Otuke marked a pivotal shift for our mission. Dr. Geelhoed noted this transformation in his journal, writing:
“Our arrival was made more pleasant by two very important features, the welcoming large cadre of eager patients and the smooth and affable Dr. Olun Jane who is the chief medical officer here in the largest—no, ONLY—health care facility in the entire District of 2.4 million souls without a medical school graduate anywhere in sight.” (Dr. Geelhoed’s journal, July 2019)
Dr. Olun Jane was sent by the Minister of Health to train under our medical guidance and act as a mediator between our team and the Orum Health Center. Along with Dr. Jane, we launched an initiative to heal hydrocele patients- a task we hoped he would sustain after our departure.
Just a few weeks ago, Dr. Jane sent us an encouraging update on the continued success of our collective project. He wrote,
Great pleasure seeing the Christmas message from you.
Hope you’re well. We too are wishing you a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We shall continue to remember you now and forever.
The package of knowledge and skills you impacted on us in the hydrocele project, hernia repair skills , goiter project has helped our community a lot .
You have left behind a wealth of information of hidden treasure.
The health of our people is our wealth.
Thank you very much professor, come again.
Be blessed in this great commission of reaching the furthest people first so that they are healed. Furthest people are the poorest people.
Thank once again for having the heart for the poor ,you may also be poor but the richest with hidden treasures .
We love you so much.
God bless you.
Our missions are enriched by the people we encounter and the lives those people will go on to heal. The Mission to Heal approach works because it uses transformative education to remove systemic barriers to quality healthcare. Dr. Olun Jane’s message is a testament to the lasting advantages of the sustainable mission, treating the root problem by supplying more medical professionals in impoverished communities.
